Tune In FCA’s national radio show is set to hit the airwaves this September By Tom Rogeberg
For years it’s been a dream, and soon it will become a reality. On Saturday, September 1, FCA will launch its new weekly radio program, Sharing the Victory, on more than 60 U.S. stations. Under the same name as this magazine, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the radio program will offer an informing and inspirational half-hour program that will air every weekend.
Serving as studio host will be longtime STV columnist and FCA State Director (Neb.) Ron Brown. A former standout college football player and 21-year assistant college coach—17 under legendary Nebraska coach Tom Osborne—Brown has experience in the field of broadcasting previously hosting both radio and television programs and serving as a college football analyst for ESPN 360.
The Sharing the Victory program will include Brown’s interviews with recognized athletes and coaches in a segment called “Champions of Faith,” plus FCA President/CEO Les Steckel’s commentaries on issues relating to the heart and soul in sportsTM in his regular feature, “Coach’s Corner.” A veteran coach who spent 32 years in both the NFL and college environments, Steckel has gained wisdom and experience through coaching, and he now shares that through his role as a widely-sought speaker and the author of One Yard Short: Turning Your Defeats Into Victories.
In addition to the segments from Brown and Steckel, Sharing the Victory listeners will hear inspiring messages given directly by outstanding players and coaches at FCA events across the country in the series called “FCA Across America.” Listeners will be given the opportunity to hear the same messages delivered by sports personalities such as the NFL’s Shaun Alexander and Drew Brees, back-to-back NCAA basketball champ Lee Humphrey, and all-time college football career wins leader Bobby Bowden.
On alternating weeks, Sharing the Victory will recognize an FCA athlete and coach of the month, as nominated by listeners; “Profiles in Service” which will report community service projects by FCA Huddles; “Where Are They Now?” updates on former athletes who are now involved in ministry projects; and “Coaching Matters,” in which athletes will talk about important life and spiritual lessons they learned from their own high school and college coaches. FCA hopes that Les Steckel’s vision to see this program launched and his insight from careers in the military, professional sports and now ministry, when coupled with Ron Brown’s enthusiasm and experience in broadcasting and coaching, will translate into a dynamic and uplifting program.
Asked to describe what he hopes to accomplish with the Sharing the Victory radio program, Brown stated that his desire is for the show to “be a voice that appeals to Christians all over the sports world by bringing glory to Jesus Christ through sports.
“God takes His voice very seriously. He doesn’t need a radio program to bellow His voice all over the world; He could shout from Heaven and echo the message loud and clear. But, through much prayer and the searching of the Scriptures, we in FCA sense God choosing us to boom His voice through a weekly national radio program. We expect to inspire and exhort the Body of Christ in the sports world to boldly pursue and glorify Jesus Christ.
“We also desire that God would sovereignly guide unbelievers to this radio ministry to hear the life-changing message of the gospel so that they might have an authentic opportunity to hear and respond to it. We will preach Christ, and Christ alone, through the vehicle of sports.”
